👋 The story behind Printidex

I built the tool I wish existed

Hi — I'm Marty, the guy behind Layer Lab Australia on YouTube. I make 3D printing content and sell printed models on the side. Or at least, I tried to. Before Printidex existed, finding something worth selling meant hours of clicking through platforms, second-guessing licenses, and hitting dead link after dead link. So I built this instead.

The problem nobody had fixed

Every time I wanted to find a model to sell, the same nightmare played out. I'd open Printables, search for something, and immediately hit a wall — half the results were printer upgrades and calibration cubes. The other half had licenses I couldn't decipher without reading a legal document.

Then I'd open MakerWorld, search again, repeat the whole process. Then Cults3D. Then Thingiverse. Four or five tabs open, manually cross-referencing everything, clicking links that half the time led to a 404.

Hours later I'd usually come up empty — either the license wasn't right, the files were gone, or I just had no idea whether anyone actually wanted the thing.

That's the problem Printidex solves.

The YouTube channel

I've been documenting my 3D printing journey on YouTube — everything from machine settings and filament reviews to what actually sells and what doesn't. Printidex grew directly out of those videos and the questions people kept asking about finding sellable models.

What Printidex actually does

Everything built around one question: is this model worth printing to sell?

🔍

7 platforms, one search

Printables, MakerWorld, Cults3D, MyMiniFactory, Thingiverse, Thangs, and Creality — all indexed and searched together.

⚖️

License decoded instantly

Every model is tagged with its actual license. Filter to only CC0, CC BY, and CC BY-SA in one click — no more reading small print.

🔗

No dead links

Every listing is verified live. If the original page is gone, the model is hidden from results. You only ever see models that actually exist.

Sellability Score

Each model is scored on license, print complexity, category demand, community validation, and live Google Trends data.

⚠️

Remix conflict detection

Catches the sneaky case where a model claims a CC0 license but is a remix of a non-commercial original.

🖨️

Printer mod filtering

Seller mode automatically strips out calibration cubes, Benchys, printer upgrades, and test prints — only sellable models remain.

Printidex vs Yeggi

Yeggi is the best known 3D model aggregator. It's fine for hobbyists who just want to find a print. But it was never built for sellers — and it shows.
